Best Organizing Medicine Cabinet Ideas
1. Take Everything Out
The first step when it comes to organizing your medicine cabinet is to see what is even in there! Depending on when you moved in, you may find things that are like decade old vitamins or prescriptions that were meant to be disposed of months ago. Or things that have no business being in the bathroom. So take everything out and wipe down the cabinet.
2. Categorize
The next step in organizing your medicine cabinet is to put things into sections. Some sections could be vitamins, medicine, hair care, skin care and toiletries. The amount of categories will also differ depending on how much space you have. Try to keep categories to relevant bathroom activities. Sometimes a receipt can find it’s way into the cabinet so try to create new spaces and habits, so that the medicine cabinet does not become a miscellaneous catch all.
3. Declutter
Go through the labels on all your vitamins and prescriptions and make sure that they are all up to date. If they are not, then follow the proper ways to dispose of them. Also dispose of things that have you not used in a long time. This could be hair ties that you never touch, lotions that you never use or vitamins you do not like. Getting rid of unused items can make your cabinet alot cleaner and easier to use.
4. Find Inspiration
Go on the internet or pinterest and look up your dream medicine cabinet. This can be helpful for giving you ideas for what is possible for organizing a medicine cabinet!
5. Create Checklist
Write a list of what you would like to include in the medicine cabinet and keep this as a priority. A lot of us only have a small cabinet so it has to be optimized for space. If you find that you keep your vitamins in the medicine cabinet, then maybe put them near your coffee machine and take them in the morning while your coffee is brewing. If you have your makeup in your bedroom, but are always bringing it to the bathroom, then make room for your make up in the bathroom.
6. Add a Tier Shelf
Putting a shelf in your medicine cabinet can help a lot. A lot of times, I find myself buying duplicates of items because they are hidden and I could not see that they were already there. By adding a tier shelf you will be able to see everything in the back and front of the medicine cabinet and stay nice and tidy.
7. Use Containers
Containers are definitely a good thing to have when organizing your medicine cabinet. It can be especially helpful for certain items like beauty supplies. In the morning, when you are getting ready you can pull out your container of makeup and neatly put it back when you are all set. I also like containers for nail polish supplies! You can pull it out, bring it to your living room and watch tv. Have a spa day in the comfort of your own home and not have to worry about the mess afterwards.
8. Magnets
Magnets are a great solution for those that do not have a lot of space. They can give you a boost of room. You can connect them to a cabinet or use them to keep up prescription information. I recommend only using magnets for very light weight items though, like q-tips or cotton balls.
9. Implement New Systems
Sometimes we find that miscellaneous things end up in the medicine cabinet. At the end of the day, when I am cleaning out my pockets, I might leave some change or a receipt in the medicine cabinet. After a while that can accumulate. Take note of what you find accumulates there. Even if it is not conventional, maybe have a small container for change to go or make it a habit to clean out your pockets when you first get into the house and keep an organizer by the door. Look for systems that you have in place and structure them to work for you.
10. Labels
Labeling is a great option for organizing your medicine cabinet, especially if you have children. You could label things to say vitamins, medicine, hair supplies. You may even want to label a container for each member of your family to put their toiletries in. In the morning, when you are still sleepy, you will have less of a chance of mixing up the tooth paste with a bottle of lotion!
11. Store Extras in Closet
There is no better feeling than going to the pharmacy and seeing a buy one get one sale of one of your favorite items! Suddenly you find yourself with 4 bottles of your favorite hairspray and no room in your medicine cabinet. Start to keep duplicates in your pantry, closet or under the sink. Then you do not have to pass up on a deal, but you can still have an organized medicine cabinet.
